WHO WE ARE
The Institute of Physiology in Rostock
The Institute of Physiology at the Medical Faculty of the University of Rostock is involved in teaching and research.
Physiology, in its broadest sense, describes the functioning of the body and is therefore one of the basic subjects of medical education.
As part of our teaching programme, we currently train around 230 students of human medicine and around 40 students of dentistry and medical biotechnology in lectures, practical courses and seminars. Our graduates regularly achieve some of the best results in the preliminary medical examination in Germany.
In the field of research, the Institute of Physiology, with its two working groups, Neurophysiology and Clinical Physiology, is interested in the mechanisms of pathogenesis of common neurological diseases such as epilepsy and dystonia, but also of tumour expansion and metastatic progression, as well as autoimmune processes within the brain. More fundamentally, we explore learning processes in the brain, the function of voltage-gated channels in nerve and muscle tissue, the regulation smooth muscle function and of blood flow and blood pressure, and the basics of peripheral oxygen measurement.
